Welcome to
WaterWheel Tai Chi
Our South
Norwalk, Connecticut studio is an intimate home to group and
private instruction in Tai-chi, Chi-kung, and the "internal"
martial arts. Our goal is to promote well-being in the community
and contribute to the development of Tai-chi and its
sister arts as resources for everyone.
Our goal is to make the learning of Tai-chi:
- Accessible
Our classes provide an open community in which we work
together to share our learning and experience, with no
titles or formalities. There are no expectations of prior
knowledge or physical ability. Questions are encouraged,
and students proceed at their own pace, with no pressure
to "keep up."
- Individualized
Small classes support a dialogue between student and
instructor that acknowledges individual needs, interests,
limitations and learning strategies to encourage practical
goals. Students are assisted in adapting exercises to
suit their abilities.
|

- Thorough
Our program is structured to establish a solid foundation,
because the most profound lessons are contained in the
most fundamental exercises. Classes incorporate body conditioning
exercises, meditation, movement forms, partnered exercises
and supplementary skills such as weapons.
- Practical
We explore the purpose and mechanics of each exercise
in detail for its practical benefits,
so that the student can feel and understand positive effects
for themselves. While acknowledging that most of our students
are not seeking to be martial artists, we treat the principles
of self defense as essential
to practicing good Tai-chi and offering a widely applicable
skill set for moving through life with grace and efficacy.

What is Tai-chi?
Tai-chi (T'ai-chi Ch'uan) is a training system for mind and body
that originated in China as a martial art and has come to be practiced
as a popular therapeutic exercise worldwide. It is practiced in
a variety of "family styles," all of which have more
in common than they do differences. [more]
What are the benefits of Tai-chi practice?
Tai-chi has gained popular recognition for its effectiveness
at relieving the deleterious effects of stress. Current studies
indicate benefits for strength, balance, flexibility, cardiovascular
health and the immune system. [more]
Why is practicing Tai-chi gaining in popularity?
Tai-chi is an effective, elegant and engaging exploration into
the relationship of mind and body which continues to mature with
lifelong practice. It is accessible to most people and yet is
adaptable enough to appeal to a broad range of interest in moderate
to challenging exercise. [more]
Where do I find Tai-chi classes?
We offer instruction six days a week,
day and evening. If our schedule does not meet your needs, many
towns offer continuing education classes and we offer a list of
other Tai-chi schools on our site.
What kind of instruction does WaterWheel Tai Chi offer?
We offer group classes in Yang Family T'ai-chi Ch'uan and various
forms of active and meditative Chi-kung (the broad family of Chinese
health practices). We also offer private classes in these arts,
as well as the other "internal" Chinese martial arts,
Pa-kua Chang and Hsing-i Ch'uan.
